Just as our cells need nutrients to be healthy, they also need light to function well. Light is composed of different wavelengths which can represent different colours as seen in the rainbow. Although some wavelengths of light are invisible, they can still have a bioactive effect on cells. Some of these effects include increasing cell energy, repair and rejuvenation. They can also increase hormone and neurotransmitter production that can help with sleep, mood, alertness and have a positive effect on gene expression. Xen LED (Light Emitting Diode) phototherapy harnesses the benefits of three light wavelengths to assist with skin and general health benefits: Red, Near Infra-Red (NIR) and Blue light therapies.

From an evolutionary perspective, the early morning dose of red and NIR light plays an important role by preparing the skin for the deleterious effects of midday UVR exposure. Each wavelength has a different penetration depth into the skin. The choice of wavelength therapy is therefore dependent on what cells and effect you are targeting and the individual’s skin tone.

Red Light Treatment is anti-inflammatory, accelerates cell renewal and repair and stimulates skin repair cells (fibroblasts) to form collagen and elastin for firmer skin. It is clinically proven to increase cell energy (ATP) which kickstarts cells to regenerate faster.

The process of micro needling causes a disruption in the skin layers that activates the wound healing response producing baby collagen (to rebuild the skin which later turns into stronger collagen). Collagen can be increased by up to 400%. Before the treatment, the skin has to be prepped and this will vary depending on your skin assessment . I like to take a holistic approach, so the pre micro-needling preparation may involve taking fish oils or the equivalent and a ABC facial serums (essentially Vitamins A, B and C which have been shown to improve, protect and repair damaged skin. Essentially three wavelengths are used for therapeutic response, Red light, Near-infrared (NIR) and Blue light. Red light therapy was originally used by NASA for plant growth purposes during shuttle missions. When it was discovered these lights also affected human cells, light receptors within your skin absorb the light which activates (ATP energy cells) and stimulates cell signalling the body. Red and NIR wavelengths are best known for improving cellular performance and encouraging the body to produce more collagen, fibroblasts, and elastin within the skin for anti-ageing, skin repair, and reduction of post-surgery scarring. NIR offers deeper penetration of the light for more darkly pigmented skin and deeper skin issues and reduces tissue inflammation. In addition, it has been shown to improve sleep and may assist with mood disorders. Blue light therapy is used for acne due to its anti-bacterial effect.

LED is extremely anti-inflammatory, increases blood flow, and aids detoxification and collagen production.
